Born in Canada, Ven. U Jagara was introduced to Buddhist practice in the early 1970’s by Robert Hover, and ordained as a monk under the Venerable Mahasi Sayadaw in Burma in 1979. He spent 15 years in Sri Lanka combining meditation with the study of Buddhist texts and periodically traveled to India where he practiced in intense retreats with S. N. Goenka. For several years he conducted retreats in India, America, Europe and Asia in the S.N. Goenka tradition. Since 1995 U Jagara has trained under the guidance of Pa Auk Sayadaw, the Burmese master renowned for his faithful adherence to the Visuddhimagga as both a practical guide to jhana and a detailed exposition of direct analytical approaches to vipassana. U Jagara assists Pa Auk Sayadaw in the teaching.
Sanna (pere arise together with feeling (vedana) and is a "marker" of sign and a "recognition" of the mark (sign). It can be used to protect/develop and understand mind's dynamic. What is needed for a beginner = mindfulness of the body.
Inquiry has to start with acknowledging where we are now, then further discernment will tell us a bit more about the why. Based on the morning instructions on the 4 Elements we come to know more about the dynamics of our life, i.e. the body and mind and the whole universe.
What are you committed to? Where is your path leading? This talk uses the Simile of the Heartwood to reflect upon various attainments and corruptions of insight that can occur through the practice. Minor attainments can support our path, but they may also become attachments if we become enchanted with them, allow them to stall our progress, or if we become negligent. We can nurture a deep aspiration without falling into traps of self-doubt, conceit, envy, or discouragement. We can aim for the ultimate goal, the liberating potential, of this path.
